Smoothies
Smoothies are extremely popular drinks nowadays and more and more people are buying the ingredients to make their own smoothies at home. Whilst you can buy specialist equipment for this there isn't a real need to do so as all you need is a blender and the ingredients you choose.
Most smoothies are made from a range of ingredients added to a frozen base. This base can be:
- Ice cubes/ice
- Frozen yoghurt
- Ice cream
- Sorbet
In general terms smoothies can be milk based or fruit and/or vegetable based. So, for example, you could make a mango smoothie by adding mango to some ice cubes and then blending it together. Or you could add some strawberries and banana to some vanilla ice cream and blend that together.
Some people will experiment by making up their own smoothie recipes whilst others will try and reproduce the smoothies they have in a café or buy in a shop. Alternatively, they may follow a recipe from a smoothie making book or Internet site. To a certain extent you can put any ingredient you like in a smoothie as long as you like it!
Smoothies can be as healthy or as luxuriously calorific as you like. This is a particularly good way of getting kids (and adults!) to get their 'five a day' portions of fruit and vegetables. Kids especially like making smoothies as they are fun to make and fun to drink.
